Description: The position of Director of Special Education is a full year assignment established by the School Committee and serves as a confidential appointee reporting directly to the Principal. The Director of Special Education is responsible for organizing, planning, directing and supervising all aspects of special education programs and the personnel assigned to those areas.
Responsibilities and Duties: 1.Develop and implement school improvement initiatives that directly impact student achievement and a positive school climate; and Pedagogy (to support differentiated instruction). 2.Provide administration, planning coordination, supervision and evaluation of programs, services, and staff in Special Education, Related Services. 3.Research grant proposals and assist in their preparation and management in conjunctions with the Grant Program Specialist and coordinate grant activities as appropriate. 4.Supervise the maintenance and safeguarding of Special Education student records in accordance with school and State policies. Including notice of record destruction and arranging for record shredding. 5.Conduct recruiting, interviewing, screening and recommendations for personnel providing special education, and related services 6.Prepare reports/materials for the Department of Education and Federal program evaluations and periodic accreditation reviews. 7.With the assistance of special education and administrative team members provide and/or arrange for the provision of special education and related services, Special Education transportation for eligible students in accordance with the provisions of state and federal laws and regulations. 8.Assist the Evaluation Team to find the best combination of educational and other services for each student with special needs. 9.Supervise the maintenance and safeguarding of Special Education student records in accordance with school and State policies. 10.Participate in regular upgrading of knowledge and skills through professional development. 11.Assist the Principal, Director of Student Services, and Academic and Vocational Coordinators in developing and implementing effective general education interventions to address student needs in attendance, behavior, academic and vocational skills. 12.Chair IEP team meetings as required. 13.Review IEP’s, evaluation reports, progress reports, and teacher assessment forms for compliance, timelines, and content. 14.Conduct transition IEP meetings and orientation activities for incoming special needs students. 15.Assist with MCAS and COPS or any other standardized testing accommodations for students with disabilities. 16.Assure appropriate home language translation services for identified families. 17.Assist with the planning and implementation of student scheduling in conjunction with the Master Schedule students with special needs. 18. Monitor budgeting in Special Education and participate in budget planning. 19.In conjunction with the Principal, Director of Student Services, Academic Coordinator and Vocational Coordinator, provide training to all district staff on the requirements of special education and on analyzing and accommodating the diverse learning styles of all students. 20.Organize, monitor and attend Parent Advisory Council meetings for parents of students with special needs. 21.Assist other administrators in prescribing appropriate placement for special needs students in accordance with state and federal guidelines. 22.Support and monitor a Work/Study program for special needs students. 23. In concert with the Leadership Team, evaluate support staff, and recommend programs and initiative for improved instruction and/or performance. 24.Agrees to complete sixty (60) hours of professional improvement per year.

1.Certification by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education as Special Education Administrator required. 2.Masters’ degree by an accredited University or College. 3.Possess minimum of five (5) years’ special education leadership/administrative experience at public secondary or vocational technical school preferred.
Compensation and Terms of Employment: 1.Salary range: $125,000 - $150,000 commensurate with professional credentials, experience, and performance.
